Before You Buy: Smart Cameras, Locks, Bulbs and Speakers

Smart home gear is tied to where you live: voltage, bulb base, door size, Wi-Fi band and app all have to line up. Our cards rate all four products here as roughly even.

Start with what you actually need

  • Cameras: The Wyze Cam v4 is a 2.5K indoor and outdoor camera for US homes that want local storage without a mandatory subscription. It is not meant for people in China who need local service and network support.
  • Locks: The Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch with Wi-Fi suits households where family or guests come and go, with fingerprint entry, remote unlocking and an activity log. Skip it if your door is not a standard US entry door or you do not want to install the Yale Access App.
  • Bulbs: The Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance A19 (E26) is for US homes that want color smart bulbs in E26 sockets, especially if you already use Alexa, Apple Home or Google Assistant. It is not for anyone who needs a voltage rating outside 110V to 130V.
  • Speakers: The HomePod mini 2 is for people who want a small speaker for multiroom audio inside Apple's ecosystem. It is not for listeners who need spatial audio or very loud output.

China and US versions: what actually differs

  • Wyze Cam v4: sold on Wyze's US site with no official China sale, so there is no China power spec. An indoor 5V/1A adapter and a 6-foot micro USB cable come in the box; the outdoor power adapter is sold separately. It runs on the Wyze app.
  • Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch: the card lists the US model. It runs on four AA alkaline batteries (included) for about a year, supports a 9V backup battery, and the Wi-Fi version needs a 2.4GHz network.
  • Philips Hue A19: US specs, with 110V to 130V input and an E26 base.
  • HomePod mini 2: ships with a 20W power adapter rated for 100V to 240V AC, 50Hz to 60Hz. Both the China and US pages say spatial audio is not supported. The US page lists Siri AI features, some arriving in a later software update; the China page does not clearly list them. Siri languages and features vary by language and region.

Common pitfalls

  • Wyze cloud recording requires a paid plan, and local storage needs a microSD card you buy yourself.
  • The Yale lock's full features need the free Yale Access App, and keyed and key-free versions are separate options, so choose before ordering. It fits doors 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches thick with a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset, on left- or right-handed doors.
  • Voice control for the Hue bulb needs a Hue Bridge, sold separately, and Apple HomeKit also runs through the Bridge. On the US product page the purchase box says a 2-year warranty and the spec table says 3 years, so go by the terms of the store you buy from.
  • The HomePod mini 2 page lists Spatial Audio and room sensing as not applicable for this model. See the card for the release date.

How our cards read

All four cards rate the price as roughly even between China and the US. Prices move daily, so check each card page for today's numbers.

  • Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch with Wi-Fi: fingerprint and Wi-Fi remote entry that works with Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings and more, and replaces an existing deadbolt with just a screwdriver. Buy; our card's call is roughly even.
  • Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance A19 (E26): 7.2W, a 60W equivalent at 810 lumens, over Bluetooth and Zigbee. Buy; roughly even.
  • Wyze Cam v4: 2.5K QHD, color night vision and an IP65 rating, with Alexa, Google Assistant and IFTTT support; no official China sale. Wait; roughly even.
  • HomePod mini 2: 8.43 cm tall, with multiroom audio, stereo pairing with a second matching speaker, and HomeKit with Thread so it can serve as a home hub. Wait; roughly even.

Before you buy

  • Check voltage and base first: the Hue A19 is 110V to 130V with an E26 base.
  • Measure door thickness and backset before ordering a lock, then pick keyed or key-free.
  • Make sure your Wi-Fi has a 2.4GHz band for the Yale Wi-Fi model.
  • Count the extras: a Hue Bridge, a microSD card or cloud plan for Wyze, and an outdoor power adapter.
  • If you live in China, note that the Wyze Cam v4 has no official China sale.
  • Check the card page for the current price.
