Before You Buy Gaming Gear: PS5, Steam Deck and Controllers

Consoles, handhelds and controllers suit different players. Check disc vs digital, where the warranty is valid, and which account region your content follows.

Start with the type you need

  • Consoles: the PlayStation 5 Disc (Slim) has a 1TB SSD and plays 4K UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray discs, which makes it the pick for people who still buy physical games. If you buy only digital, the digital model is smaller. The PlayStation 5 Pro has 2TB of storage and suits players who want higher-end visuals and plan to stay with PlayStation for years; casual players on a tight budget can skip it.
  • Handheld: the Steam Deck OLED 512GB is for portable PC gaming on a 7.4-inch HDR OLED screen, with 3 to 12 hours of play depending on the game and a weight of about 640 grams. It is not for people who only play mobile or console games.
  • Controller: the Xbox Wireless Controller is Microsoft's official pad for Xbox and PC players, and it also works with Android and iOS.

China model vs US model

  • PS5 Pro: the mainland China version is sold by Sony Interactive Entertainment Shanghai and carries a two-year console warranty under China's consumer rules. The US version has a one-year limited warranty.
  • PS5 Disc (Slim): sold on both the China and US sites. The US unit has a one-year limited hardware warranty from SIE that is valid only in the United States and Canada.
  • Regions and accounts: PS5 game discs are not region-locked, but DLC and store purchases follow the region of your PSN account. Blu-ray movie discs are still region-coded.
  • Power: both PS5 models have an internal power supply rated 100 to 240V AC. The PS5 Pro has a maximum rated power of 390W.
  • Xbox Wireless Controller: the China and US pages list the same thing, AA batteries for up to 40 hours and the same platform support. Colors and versions vary by region.
  • Steam Deck OLED: multiple Steam accounts can sign in on one Deck, each with its own local saves and settings. Official direct sales cover the US, Canada, the UK and the EU, with Komodo selling it in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Common pitfalls

  • The shift to digital: Sony's pages say that from January 2028, newly released games will be digital-only. Discs you already own will still play. Factor that in if you plan to keep buying discs.
  • The PS5 Pro has no disc drive. You need to buy the PS5 disc drive separately. Part of the 2TB is reserved for the system, and Pro enhancements apply only to games that support them.
  • The vertical stand for the PS5 Disc (Slim) is sold separately.
  • Steam Deck models differ: the OLED and LCD versions have different screens, batteries and Wi-Fi. The 1TB unit is a separate model, and the 512GB version takes a microSD card for more space.
  • The Xbox controller runs on AA batteries, not a built-in rechargeable pack.
