Start with the type you need

  • Over-ear noise cancelling: the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) suit long commutes and travel where noise cancelling and battery life matter. The Sonos Ace suits listeners who want spatial audio and easy switching between two devices, and it does more if you already own Sonos gear. Both are rated around 30 hours. The Bose card says it is not for people who need wired headphones; the Ace is a poor fit if you are not in the Sonos ecosystem or are shopping on value.
  • True wireless: the Xiaomi Buds 5 Pro suit commuters and office users who want noise cancelling and aptX Lossless. The earbuds are rated IP54, so athletes who need more protection should look elsewhere.
  • Sport earbuds: the Powerbeats Pro 2 have ear hooks and optical heart-rate sensors in both buds, and work with iPhone and Android. Skip them if you only want music.
  • Portable speaker: the Sonos Roam 2 is an IP67 speaker with up to 10 hours of battery for home and outdoor use. It cannot serve as a home theater surround speaker.

China model vs US model

  • Xiaomi Buds 5 Pro: the card lists China-model specs. There are Bluetooth and Wi-Fi versions with different batteries and codec support: 8 hours per charge for Bluetooth, 10 hours for Wi-Fi (music playback). LC3 is supported on some models only.
  • Sonos Roam 2: the card notes it is sold officially in China.
  • Bose QuietComfort Ultra (2nd Gen): the card is based on the US store page. BoseCare extended warranty and accident protection are paid add-ons there, and no power adapter is included.
  • Powerbeats Pro 2: the card is based on the US store page, with a warranty card in the box. The power adapter and USB-C cable are sold separately.

Common pitfalls

  • Apps: full Bose features, settings and updates need the Bose app, though basic Bluetooth listening works without it. EQ and settings on the Sonos Ace, and stereo pairing on the Roam 2, go through the Sonos app.
  • Codecs: the Sonos Ace supports AAC, SBC and aptX, but not aptX HD. Bose's aptX Adaptive and Snapdragon Sound features need a compatible source device. The Powerbeats Pro 2 support SBC and AAC only.
  • Ecosystem lock-in: TrueCinema and TV audio features on the Sonos Ace need a compatible Sonos soundbar. Two Roam 2 speakers can form a stereo pair, but not home theater surrounds.
  • Reading battery claims: the Powerbeats Pro 2's 45 hours is the total with the case; per-charge life is up to 10 hours, or 8 hours (36 total) with ANC on. The Bose drops to 23 hours with Immersive Audio. Xiaomi's figures come from music playback under set conditions and vary with volume and settings.
  • Folding: the Bose earcups fold into the included case; the Sonos Ace earcups only fold flat.
